Why do women pay more than men for haircuts?

The National Post reports this morning that Ontario Liberal MPP Lorenzo Berardinetti has proposed legislation to make it illegal to charge women more than men for similar products and services, such as dry cleaning, hairstyling, and clothing.

From the article: "The newly-married politician (...) noticed clothes made for men were invariably cheaper than those for women even though they were the same brand."

The private member's bill, if passed, would stipulate a $50,000 fine for any business that charges "gender-based" pricing. Debate on the bill opens in the Ontario legislature on April 15.

I, for one, welcome our non-gender-based-pricing overlords.
