Dead pixels explained

Sometimes individual pixels burn out. My old laptop had one that was permanently pink. These are referred to as "dead pixels."
Technically speaking this is true only of LCD panels, although the picture is one I took from my CRT TV a couple of years ago, and photoshopped. :)
